The company was founded in 1970 as Midlands Cosmetic Sales by David Slater and Marcia Simmons. Initially, it operated as a cosmetics business under the infamous Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham. 

When the current owners Adrian Slater and Tania Fossey took over the business, they rebranded as Baylis & Harding and developed it into the successful business it is today. The Baylis & Harding name pays homage to the current owners’ grandparents, which adds a historical connection to the brand.

Baylis & Harding packaging is created with their two principles in mind; they want to create packaging that has a luxury feel without compromising the environment. They adopt principles from the Plastic Pact 2018, which means they:

  • Commit to reducing the plastic in their products as much as possible.
  • Encourage consumers to recycle and reuse their packaging as much as possible.
  • Are working to incorporate recycled material into the packaging and to provide alternatives for single-use plastics, such as refillable options and reusable design.
  • Are committed to supporting initiatives which make a positive impact on the environment and are proud to be supporters of the UK Marine Conservation Society.

The Baylis & Harding Recycling Scheme

The company also announced its commitment to a more sustainable future with the Baylis & Harding Recycling Scheme in partnership with TerraCycle. Every year pumps, caps and tubes end up in landfill and are never recycled, which is a problem. 

TerraCycle is a specialist company that recycle these product parts, as government recycling schemes often don’t have the equipment to do it. By partnering with TerraCycle, the linear recycling scheme is replaced by a circular one.

Baylis & Harding customers can either send their waste to TerraCycle, or they can drop it off at the nearest recycling centre.

  • No animal testing on either any of their products or any chemical used in their products or packaging.
  • No real fur/bone/horn/shell/teeth/tusk/feather in their products.
  • No animal-derived ingredients in any of their fragrances – whales/musk etc.
  • No animal-derived glue in their product packaging.
  • No images on their products which promote animal cruelty.

Vegan-Friendly Promise

With the increasing demand for vegan-friendly products, Baylis & Harding offer ranges that are suitable for vegans, except for the Oatmeal, Milk & Honey handwash which contains extracts of milk and honey.
